6 Styles
We were invited to design a poster to celebrate AIGA/NY’s thirtieth anniversary. Since we had complete creative freedom, we decided to experiment with designing letterforms that did not resemble traditional letters. Our goal was to create an experience that required some exploration on the reader’s part. As they read the poster, they would ask themselves, “Is that an “I” or two “Hs” next to each other?” This gave us a fun challenge to create a fully functioning font on the edge of legibility and delirium. We wanted to challenge the idea of what a letter is and how it is defined. We began by designing the Light version and then created the Black version by changing the weight of the serifs and increasing the stroke thickness slightly. We were surprised that the Black version was more legible than the Light version. We now have a font with intermediate weights that range from legible to barely legible, depending on the style weight.
